Humble Beginnings
Turning a hobby into a job can be quite a journey, and that’s exactly what Josh and Abbey Schmitt did. Like many small businesses, Banyan Coffee started from humble beginnings. For Josh and Abbey, it was roasting coffee beans in their garage using an ordinary popcorn maker as a hobby. They shared their coffee with family and friends for a while and eventually, Josh was encouraged to start selling coffee at the farmer’s market. It was then they realized that this could turn into more than just a hobby or side hustle. The customers loved it, and they were able to get direct feedback from them to further improve their product. In 2022, they opened a brick-and-mortar coffee shop and roastery in Palmetto and have been there ever since. They now have expanded into selling in retail stores like Detwiler’s and also ship their coffee nationwide.
The Banyan Coffee Difference
Josh and Abbey wanted Banyan to be different than the coffee widely available on grocery store shelves. They wanted freshness and quality to be at the foundation of their business. They only use ethically sourced, single origin coffee and are very selective about the farmers they work with. This allows them to offer a higher quality final product to their customers.
Blended and flavored coffees lack a lot of flavors and rely on the addition of natural or artificial flavors to add to the coffee, but with Banyan Coffee, you get the best quality bean every time. They don’t offer blends or flavored coffee, so they don’t ever sacrifice the integrity of the beans.
Banyan also makes sure to put the roast date on each bag of coffee, so you know you’re getting a fresh product. Most coffee companies just provide an expiration date with no transparency about the roast date, so you really don’t know how fresh your coffee is. While it’s best to consume coffee within a few weeks of purchase, whole bean coffee still tastes great after a few months. It’s best to store coffee in a cool, dry place to ensure freshness.
